In 1997, John and Susan Sykes were on the hunt for a 100-acre farm where they could keep a couple of riding horses and create a getaway for their children and grandchildren. It would be a place to relax and bond as a family. From that initial thought, Woodford Thoroughbreds was created. When John drove through the front gates for the first time, he knew immediately he was going to buy the 750-acre farm and training facility, even though he didn't yet own a single Thoroughbred.

From that initial moment, Woodford Thoroughbreds has continually evolved as John and Susan have become more involved in Thoroughbred racing and breeding and invested in the farm, its facilities and upgraded their breeding stock.

Woodford is a unique operation that breeds and sells its own mares, weanlings, yearlings and two-year-olds, as well as offers breaking, training, and consignment for outside clients. We are actively involved in multiple aspects of the Thoroughbred racing industry; we are able to evaluate matings and bloodstock to advise on the best outcomes for success. In addition, our training facility has become well respected and served as the training grounds for many world-class Thoroughbreds including Cairo Prince, Stopchargingmaria, Midnight Bisou, Discreet Lover and more.

Woodford operates under the principals that made John Sykes so successful in his many businesses. There is a commitment to honesty and doing the right thing above all else. There is a dedication to the horse, an investment in the team, and he is a mentor who drives Woodford forward to be successful in an industry that is inherently risky and constantly changing.
